Progesterone (PROG), also known as progesterone, luteinizing hormone, insoluble in water, soluble in organic solvents, is the main progesterone secreted by the ovary with biological activity.

In early pregnancy, maternal blood progesterone comes mainly from the corpus luteum of the ovary, and a small amount of progesterone is synthesized and secreted by the placental villi; with the growth of the placenta, the number of villi increases, and the production of progesterone by the placental villi increases. At 8 weeks of gestation, it basically replaces the function of the corpus luteum, and PROG levels will continue to rise thereafter.
